As we grow older, our fashion preferences and shopping habits tend to change. At this stage in life, I’m prioritizing comfort, quality, and versatility over fast fashion trends. I’m rounding up some of the best places to shop for clothing for mature women, including my favorite stores and brands.

Best Clothing Stores for Ladies Over 50

Nordstrom:

CUT FROM THE KLOTH CHIFFON BUTTON UP size M / NYDJ TERESA WIDE LEG ANKLE size 8 / SILVER TONE EARRINGS CASLON TANK

Nordstrom offers a wide range of stylish and elegant clothing options that cater to different tastes and preferences. If you’re a frequent reader of AWSL, you know that I shop at Nordstrom often, and you can read about some of my recent Nordstrom finds here and here. If you’re shopping in-store, Nordstrom has an excellent customer service team that is always willing to help shoppers find what they are looking for and offer style advice tailored to their needs, but my favorite way to shop is on their website since I can use the search bar to locate exactly what I’m looking for.

  • Dillards: In-Store/Online – mainly found in the south but has a great selection for weddings and events and carries many brands that Nordstrom does.

Higher-End Brands to Shop: $$$

Eileen Fisher (In-Store/Online):

ORGANIC HANDKERCHIEF LINEN CLASSIC LONG SHIRT size S / ORGANIC SLUB JERSEY TEE size S / COTTON PONTE SLIM PANT size PS

One of my favorite stores to visit while here in Vancouver is Eileen Fisher because I love their designs and don’t have one near me in California. It’s also one of my best sellers here on the blog because their sizing is extensive, the styles are timeless, and they create sustainable fashion that stands the test of time. I won’t shop at fast fashion stores and want to do all I can to ensure workers are paid a living wage. Building a sustainable wardrobe is more important to me as I age because I’m concerned about the impact of discarded clothing that is clogging our landfills.

Frank & Eileen:

TRAVEL JACKET AND PANTS SET size M / CARRY ON TOTE / ROLLER BAG / SNEAKERS / BELT BAG / TEE

In a world of fast fashion, finding a brand that aligns with my values as a consumer can be difficult. Frank & Eileen is a woman-owned company with a leadership team that is 100% female and believes in sustainable, ethical fashion. On top of all of that, their pieces are timeless, versatile, and stylish. My travel set is almost sold out, but here is a similar set. I also own and adore this cropped peacoat.

J. McLaughlin (In-Store/Online):

I loved this Calla Dress at a dressing room diary last year. Available in two prints this year.

J.McLaughlin’s style is known for its bright colors, bold patterns, and playful prints, making it a favorite among those who appreciate preppy and chic fashion. While higher in price point than many of the things I tend to feature, J.McLaughlin really does have quality, classic pieces that can be in your wardrobe for years to come.

Jenni Kayne:

This Fisherman Sweater was one of my favorite finds last year!

I’ve been admiring Jenni Kayne’s pieces for years. Jenni Kayne’s clothing is known for its clean lines, neutral colors, and classic silhouettes, making it a great choice for those who prefer timeless pieces. They are very high-quality, classic pieces that will last you for years to come. With that amazing quality does come a higher price tag, so when I saw their best-selling Fishermen sweater marked way down during their Black Friday sale, it jumped into my cart. When the box arrived, I fully expected to send it back…until I touched it. It’s the softest cashmere I have ever felt in my life. I tried it on, and that was it. I could not send it back.

Nic + Zoe:

NIC+ZOE 4-WAY CONVERTIBLE CARDIGAN size M / LINEN SKIRT / METALLIC SANDALS / LINEN TANK / SILVER NECKLACE / STRAW BAG

Nic + Zoe might be a brand you’ve never heard of unless you do a lot of shopping at Nordstrom. Their collections feature contemporary designs, playful prints, and vibrant colors that are perfect for both work and play. I find myself owning a lot of their tanks and tees, which are great for layering under other items. I also get so much use out of this 4-way convertible cardigan.

Chico’s (In Store/Online + Classic):

NO-IRON LINEN STRIPE SHIRT size 1 / GIRLFRIEND FRAY HEM KICK FLARE JEANS size 0.5 / VERY OLD DRIVING MOCS

Chico’s is unique for a major women’s clothing retailer because they carry styles to fit all women’s tastes and style recipes. Chico’s sizes are named a little different than most brands, but here is a quick guide to make it easier for you: 000(0/XS),  00 (0/2– XS), 0 (4/6 S), 1 (8/10-M), 2 (12/14-L), 3 (16/18-XL) 4 (20/22-XXL). The brand also carries many garments in petite and some in tall. Their “No-Iron” shirts, like the linen one I’m wearing here, are fabulous.

Talbots (In-Store/Online):

CLASSIC JEAN JACKET ROSE WASH size MP / JERSEY RAGLAN TEE size MP / GREENWICH LINEN PANTS size 8P

Talbots is another go-to shopping destination for me! This size-inclusive brand has been providing women with timeless, modern, classic styles for 75 years, and their high-quality pieces last me for years and years. You can see some of my most recent finds at Talbots here and here.

Athleta (In-Store/Online):

ATHLETA ENDLESS PANTS size 6

I’ve talked about my love of this brand multiple times! I find their pieces super comfy and perfect for everyday or travel. I personally can recommend the Brooklyn Ankle pants, their Endless pants, and any of their featherless jackets or vests.

EVERLASTING SHIRT size S / LANTERN SKIRT size S / STRAW BAG / SIMILAR SANDALS / BRACELET

I’ve got several of these Everlasting shirts and love how perfect they are for travel.

Quince (Online):

CASHMERE TURTLENECK

I’m delighted to have discovered Quince and love everything I’ve ordered. My favorite is their cashmere. I started with this $50 Cashmere sweater and never looked back. The quality is lovely, and the price can’t be beat.

FISHERMANS SWEATER size S / PACKABLE FEDORA / SIMILAR JEANS / ECCO SNEAKERS

Their cotton fisherman sweater is a great quality and perfect for this time of year.
